If you were on Main Street in downtown Springfield on Friday afternoon, you likely saw preparations well underway for the World's Largest Pancake Breakfast, but what you may not have noticed 15 feet off the ground in a tree was a red-tailed hawk and a squirrel in an old-fashioned standoff. Several passersby took a few minutes from their busy days to stop and watch this wild encounter; one not often seen on a bustling downtown street. I am pleased to report that the hawk apparently gave up after several hours of waiting for the squirrel to make the first move and the squirrel lived to see another World's Largest Pancake Breakfast!
