  • The Great Johnstown Flood. Heavy flood rains caused a dam to burst, sending a wall of water 75' high and a half-mile wide, completely wiping out the town of Johnstown, Pennsylvania. More than 2200 people died in the disaster, 1889
  • Late freeze in New England. The temperature in Burlington, VT drops to 25 degrees, severely damaging are crops.
