30 Years Ago: A Look Back at the Blizzard of 1978

By Brandon Butcher

I wouldn't go through it again, I thought it was a goner…" and such was the sentiment shared by many 30-years ago, as the Blizzard of '78 drifts back into memory. Record snows and rare winds pounded the region for more than 30-hours straight. Harry Terban was one at the Weather Service that got a first look at the storm. It was a benign little system it became… elements in the atmosphere were becoming aligned with eachother at the surface and aloft …the system just closed off and intensified…It was Sunday morning when we first put out a Storm Watch…Up until the early afternoon, about 4 oclock there was only 3" of snow on the ground… That was the end of 'only' Things were deteriorating quite fast…winds picking up blowing quite strong…the snow was heavy… "Please remain in your homes, and do not drive…" I was supposed to go into work on the midnight shift Monday Night… Got to Rt 128 and…it was like a parking lot down there…everyone was snowbound…nobody could go anyplace…I just pulled my car over to the side of the road where 100s of motorists were already stranded…and I just abandoned my car…"It snowed hard, with hurricane force winds, through the night into Tuesday…and when it was over……It was just the beginning…The snow was deep everywhere…but here in Woonsocket Rhode Island…54" of snow…drifts to street-signs…" Western Massachusetts by no means was spared either, picking up 15-20" across the scene …It took more than 4 days to clear off more than 12,000 miles of roads made completely impassable by the blizzard … rescuing those stranded … and bringing needed supplies back in. ...it was sensational… it never happened before… or since.
