If there is a snow season in which there is a lot of snow, the prolonged snowcover actually insulates the ground (often digging 'into' the snow is a means of survival for those trapped outdoors), and can safely delay the blossoming of trees and plants until the time of killing frosts have passed. One of the worst situations for crops is alternate thawing and freezing, which a snowpack would ultimately smooth out.
