EASTHAMPTON, MA (WSHM) -

An elderly Easthampton couple arrived home Tuesday afternoon and found that their home had been broken into and their toy poodle had been killed.

Officers responded to an upper Loudville Road residence about 4 p.m. after receiving a complaint, according to Easthampton police Capt. Robert J. Alberti.

The elderly homeowners told police that their 12-year-old toy poodle, Hanna, would always run to the door to greet them upon their arrival, but they became worried when that did not happen Tuesday.

The couple then realized that their home had been broken into and soon found their dead dog at the bottom of the basement stairs, Alberti said.

An examination by a veterinarian determined that the dog died from blunt trauma to the head, according to Alberti.

"Investigators observed blood on the basement stairs and Hannah deceased on the basement floor," Alberti said.

An undisclosed amount of cash and medication was taken from the residence in addition to other items, Alberti said.

Witnesses said they possibly saw a black or gray colored SUV in the victims' driveway during the late morning or early afternoon hours Tuesday.

Anyone who has information pertaining to that SUV or suspicious people in the Loudville Road area is asked to call the Easthampton Police Department at (413) 527-1212.
