GREENSBORO, N.C. -

Officials in Greensboro have begun efforts to gather a panel of legal representatives to discuss police body worn cameras and public records.

A statement from the city says the discussion is planned for late September.

Mayor Nancy Vaughan says the meeting is expected to yield constructive discussion on whether police body worn camera footage should be publicly released. Most body worn camera footage is protected under state statutes governing personnel and criminal intelligence.

Vaughan said technology is ahead of the law, and while officials are sensitive to requests from the media for camera footage, the city isn't going to violate state law.

Greensboro City Attorney Tom Carruthers will serve as the panel moderator. Information regarding the date, time and location of the panel will be provided once details are confirmed.
