LAPEER, MI (WNEM) -

Two women are dead and 9 others were injured after a car hit a parade float in Lapeer County.

Lapeer Township police officers and Lapeer County sheriff's deputies responded to the scene at Turill and Clark roads in Lapeer Township on Saturday about 10 a.m.

Jeanette Rumptz, 80, of Metamora, was driving a Subaru Outback heading eastbound on Turrill Road. She stopped for the stop sign and entered the intersection, performing a left turn to travel northbound on Clark Road, police said.

Rumptz entered the path of a parade float, which was not involved in a parade at the time, traveling southbound on Clark Road, police said.

The parade float collided with Rumptz's vehicle and Rumptz was pronounced dead at the scene.

The float was traveling to Metamora for the Metamora County Days Parade. The float had an unenclosed area in the back that consisted of wood benches for passengers, police said.

There were 10 passengers of the float who sustained injuries. The float was driven by Gerald Butterfield, 83, of Columbiaville, police said. Seven people were ejected from the back of the float.

The passengers were transported to McLaren-Lapeer Region Medical Center in Lapeer and Hurley Medical Center in Flint. Two adults sustained life-threatening injuries and were in serious condition, police said.

One of them, Janet Lough, 76, of Lapeer, died Tuesday. The other adult, Grace Butterfield, 73, of Columbiaville remains in serious condition.

There were two children, aged 8 and 9, who were treated and released for non-life-threatening injuries.

Alcohol and excessive speed do not appear to be contributing factors, police said.

The crash remains under investigation. Anyone who witnessed the crash is urged to contact Lapeer County Sheriff's Detective Sgt. Jason Parks at 810-245-1381.
