PAINESVILLE, OH (WOIO) -

A fire at the Painesville Health department building caused problems for firefighters Wednesday morning thanks to a troubling spot between the steel supports and the roof.

A total of 20 departments assisted in the five-alarm fire. The alarm came in at 6:23 a.m., just as a heavy thunderstorm came through.

It is unclear if lightning had anything to do with the fire, but fire officials say it will not be ruled out as a cause.

The heaviest damage was in a mechanical area.

"We're assisting them in getting their necessary electronics out and any records they're trying to salvage and, again, we're working on saving that part of it," said Painesville Fire Chief Mark Mlachak.

The building housed everything from birth certificates, to food programs, to testing facilities.

"There were no injuries. There were no chemicals involved," said Dawn Laurel Cole, with the Lake County Health District.

The building will be out of commission for at least six months, which has health workers scrambling to relocate services.

Some paper records were lost. Computer restoration companies will work on hard drives salvaged by firefighters.

If you need a specific service, officials say check the Lake County Board of Health website or the Painesville Administration Building.

The cause remains under investigation.
