German American Festival finds new sausage supplier after Tank's shuts down

OREGON, OH (Toledo News Now) -

It came as a shock to organizers of the upcoming German American Festival when the company that normally supplies the festival's popular sausage was shut down.

Organizers say they will, fortunately, still have all the bratwurst and knockwurst people can eat this weekend.

Last Friday, organizers were informed by their supplier, Tank's Meats of Elmore, OH, that the state shut them down after inspectors determined Tank's had not developed an approved label for three of its products.

Tank's can no longer fill customers' orders, so calls were made and festival organizers found Alexander and Hornung of St. Clair Shores, near Detroit, to supply the meat.

"All the quantities – we're ready to go on that. We have no issue on those whatsoever," said festival chairman Tim Pecseyne. "Smoked hocks come from a different supplier, and those will be ready to go. Chickens will be ready to go. All of the foods that we've had will be ready to go."

The new supplier doesn't make a mushroom and Swiss cheese brat, but all the other favorites will be there.

The German American Festival runs Friday night through Sunday, Aug. 22-24.
