CLEVELAND, OH (WOIO) -
A hit and run driver critically injured a local father and as police search for the suspect, the victim's family is seeking justice.

Maurice Hewston has been at MetroHealth Medical Center for almost a week. He's the father of two young girls and his family has been by his side since the accident.

The 21-year-old is in critical but stable condition. He's been here since August 13 when he was hit by a vehicle early in the morning as he walked at the intersection of East 55th Street and Lexington Avenue.

The driver sped off leaving Hewston with punctured lungs, fractured ribs and a damaged spleen.

19 Action News reporter George Smith spoke with his mom about his recovery.

"He's getting better, said his mother Eurnealuia James. "He's moving around in the bed a little more, but he's restrained."

He remains on a ventilator and police are still searching for the driver who hit him. Investigators told the Hewston's family they're examining surveillance camera footage from businesses in the area of the accident.

Hewston's mother has been spending most of her days at the hospital praying for her son's recovery.

"It's really tough because Maurice is like the comic of the family," James said. "He makes everybody laugh.  Everybody loves Maurice."

Hewston has two daughters ages 2 and 4. His mother has a message for the driver who took off.

"You're a coward," James said. "You messed up a young man's life that was trying to turn his life around."

At this point, it's not clear when Hewston will be able to leave the hospital. His family says he is showing signs of improvement, but they're expecting it will take a long time for him to recover.
