Enshrinement festivities begin at Hall of Fame

SPRINGFIELD, MA (WSHM) -

The Basketball Hall of Fame is one day away from inducting its class of 2014.

Over the course of the weekend, the inductees will pick up various items for their honor.

In front of a packed center court at the hall of fame, and a national television audience, the ten inductees received their jackets and spoke about what this weekend means to them.

For David Stern, who oversaw the greatest expansion in league history during his three decades as the National Basketball Association commissioner, this weekend's honor is an emotional one.

"This enshrinement is very meaningful, at the top of the list, because it recognizes through me the thousands of people that have worked together," said Stern.

The other marquee name this weekend is former Miami Heat all-star Alonzo Mourning, who said everyone inducted this year was on the stage for a reason.

"The one thing that resonates with all of us is that we all have a deep passionate love for the game," said Mourning. "We put our heart and soul into it, to our craft and good things evolve for it."

From the college ranks, two notable coaches are being enshrined this weekend.

Former Maryland head coach Gary Williams and former Arkansas head man Nolan Richardson.

Both men said they truly appreciate being selected by the hall of fame committee.

"I never thought I'd be around people like this," said Williams. "This weekend is going to be a big thrill for me. I'm really looking forward to enjoying it. The best thing about this is you think about all of the people that helped you get to here."

"Has it been something I wanted? Absolutely," Richardson stated.  "And I'm sure that all of my classmates wanted the same things."

Thursday night at the hall, there is a family reception and awards dinner.

Enshrinement takes place Friday night at 7:30 p.m. at Symphony Hall.

Fans should see some big names on the red carpet beforehand, as Larry Bird and Magic Johnson are scheduled to present Stern.
