Police issued a scam alert after receiving more than 20 complaints from victims in the last two weeks.
Springfield residents have been receiving cell phone calls from people claiming that a close family member has either been badly injured in an accident or that their loved one had been kidnapped and is being held for ransom, according to Springfield police Sgt. John Delaney.
That's when they instruct the person to wire them a large sum of money through Western Union, Delaney said.
"This is a scam and the perpetrators sound very convincing that their family member is actually in a serious accident or being held against their will," Delaney said.
If you receive a call, make a note of the number and hang up the phone right away. Then contact the Springfield Police Department's Detective Bureau at 413-787-6355.
