Anti-casino group launches Springfield campaign

Posted: Updated:

BOSTON (AP) - Anti-casino activists are setting their sights on Springfield as they hope to win voter support for a November ballot question to repeal the state's casino law. Organizers for "Repeal the Casino Deal" held their first formal meetings with volunteers in the city Wednesday.

John Ribeiro, the group's chairman, said the city represents a key battleground since it would be home to the state's first licensed casino: a proposed $800 million MGM resort.

An MGM spokeswoman said the company is focused on preparing for moving forward with the project if the repeal question is defeated.

The casino, along with Mohegan Sun and Penn National Gaming, is financing a campaign to defeat the ballot question. That organization has not yet brought on staff or begun soliciting or receiving donations, its chairman said.
