A massive dry pothole opened up on Interstate 91 southbound near Exit 6 just before 1 p.m. Wednesday, which caused several flat tires, according to state police officials.
Multiple cars were stranded on the side of the highway and on Exit 6 after hitting the pothole that was located in a repaired portion of the middle lane.
State police had the middle and left lane of the highway closed near exit 7 while MassDOT worked to repair the damaged roadway.
Traffic was backed up to the Interstate 291 interchange while road repairs were being made early Wednesday afternoon. The repairs were expected to last through the evening rush hour and traffic was expected to be heavy in the area, MassDOT officials said.
