Sierra Vista Police arrest five; seize nearly 2 tons of marijuana

TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) - Five men are facing possible drug charges after Sierra Vista Police seized nearly two tons of marijuana.

According to a Sierra Vista Police Department release, the five men were arrested in separate incidents, beginning with a traffic stop on July 11.

SVPD discovered nearly 1,200 pounds of marijuana bundles in a flat bed trailer, according to the release. Officers responded to a suspicious vehicle report that started with information from ICE and Homeland Security and Border Patrol personnel. According to the report a truck with a flatbed trailer was seen allegedly being loaded with bales of marijuana. Police reported seeing the same truck and trailer near 7th Street and Fry Boulevard where a man, identified as Gadhi Corella, was also seen allegedly running from the vehicle. Corella was pursued by officers on foot, said the release and arrested.

An additional SVPD patrol car followed the truck and trailer on 7th Street, pulling the truck over for a traffic violation. SVPD officers searched the trailer and found several bundles of marijuana partially covered. The driver of the truck, Heinz Scriba was arrested.

According to the SVPD release a search warrant was obtained to search a home in Whetstone, in the 2300 block of Mustang Heights Road. Officers and agents discovered an additional 135 bundles of marijuana at the house.

Both seizures netted a total of 3,800 pounds of marijuana, worth an estimated $1.6 million. During the search of the Whetstone house two men, Francisco Lara-Delgado and Omar Galindo Islava, both from Mexico, were found and arrested. According to the SVPD release a fifth man, Mark Jesus Gomez-Gallegos, was allegedly seen loading marijuana bundles onto the trailer. He was arrested on July 14.

The five are currently booked into the Cochise County Jail and are facing the following charges:

Scriba -transportation of marijuana and possession of marijuana for sale; Corella - transportation of marijuana for sale, possession of marijuana for sale and criminal trespassing. Lara-Delgado, Islava and Gomez-Gallegos - all face possession of marijuana, possession of marijuana for sale and possession of drug paraphernalia.
