University of South Carolina sports fans can soon own a piece of Gamecocks basketball history.
As the University changes the functions of Carolina Coliseum, it is selling seats from the arena's pull-out bleachers.
University officials announced Tuesday Carolina Coliseum will be renovated to make room for a two-court basketball practice facility, which will be used by both men's and women's basketball teams. Work is expected to be completed in time for practice to begin in October.
In order to make room for both courts, crews will remove about 3,000 seats from the pull-out bleacher sections. The courts will be re-oriented as well.
The University plans to sell about 75 sets, three seats each, from the removed bleacher sections.
The basketball teams' current practice facility will become home to the volleyball team for practice and competitions.
Because of the reconfiguration, the arena at Carolina Coliseum will no longer be used to host events such as high school commencement ceremonies. Those events will be moved to Colonial Life Arena. The Coliseum concourse will continue to host events on the concourse, such as college fairs, job fairs and receptions.
"At this time no further decisions have been made about possible future uses of the coliseum or its renovation as we have a significant opportunity to re-imagine that space," USC Director of Communications and Marketing Wes Hickman said.
As the schools of Journalism and Mass Communication and HRSM prepare to move to new facilities, they will remain in the coliseum until the new facilities are completed.
The three-seat sections can be purchased for $60 apiece. Purchase includes a certificate of authenticity. USC fans interested in purchasing Carolina Coliseum seats can click here for more information or call the Budget and Control Board's Surplus Property Office at 803-896-6880.
