Malloy unveils first ad in Connecticut gov race

Posted: Updated:

HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) - Democratic Gov. Dannel P. Malloy is running the first campaign ads in his re-election bid.

The 60-second spot, which began airing on Monday, is titled "Tough Times" and focuses on the struggles Connecticut has faced, ranging from historic storms and a state budget crisis to the mass school shooting in Newtown.

The ad contends Connecticut has made progress under the leadership of Malloy and Lt. Gov. Nancy Wyman.

The ad says Malloy got the state's budget woes "under control," by relying on spending cuts and "new revenue," a reference to his tax increases. Malloy is also credited with helping small businesses create jobs, increasing education funding and helping to pass legislation to address gun violence.

One of Malloy's Republican rivals, John McKinney, will begin airing his first TV ad Tuesday.
