Police: Taunton robbery suspect a gambling addict

Posted: Updated:

TAUNTON, Mass. (AP) - A 67-year-old Taunton man has pleaded not guilty to two weekend bank robberies that prosecutors say he carried out because he had gambling debts and was being evicted from his public housing apartment.

Robert Lee Augustine was arraigned Monday in Taunton District court.

The Taunton Daily Gazette reports prosecutor Jeff Daley said Augustine got more than $1,400 from the robberies. Augustine's bail was set at $50,000 each on the robbery charges.

Authorities say Augustine robbed an Eastern Bank in Taunton at about 9:30 a.m. Saturday, and then robbed a Santander Bank in Raynham about 15 minutes later. Police say he used the same note in each heist, claiming he was armed, although police doubt he had a weapon.

Police tell the Boston Herald that Augustine had an addiction to scratch-off lottery tickets.
