Man due in court on Newtown threat charge

NEW HAVEN, Conn. (AP) - A Venezuelan man charged with making threatening phone calls to Newtown residents days after the school shooting is due to make his first court appearance in Connecticut.

Wilfrido Cardenas Hoffman, who was arrested last month, is scheduled to appear Wednesday in federal court in New Haven.

Prosecutors say Cardenas Hoffman made the calls two days after the 2012 shootings in which 20 first graders and six educators were killed at Sandy Hook Elementary School. Authorities say in a few calls, he claimed to be the shooter and threatened to kill the person he called.

Public defenders in Florida and Connecticut representing Cardenas Hoffman declined comment.

Adam Lanza fatally shot his mother at their Newtown home before going to the school and gunning down 26 people before killing himself.
