Dozens of healthcare providers turned out for a training program to learn strategies for responsible prescribing practices on Thursday night in Greenfield.
The seminar was put on by the Greenfield-based Opioid Education and Awareness Task Force.
Organizers say they are reaching out to those in the medical field to help them understand how to counsel patients and caregivers about the safe use of opioid medications, and communicate about the need for close monitoring.
Attendees at the meeting also learned ways to effectively communicate with patients who they suspect may be misusing opioids.
"It's engaging providers to prescribe opioids in a responsible way and to seek out other ways to manage chronic pain with patients," said Marisa Hebble, coordinator of the task force.
Task force members say they hope to hold more training seminars in the future.
