A registered level three sex offender exposed himself to a group of young women Wednesday afternoon, Amherst Police Lt. Ronald Young said.
Amherst police responded to Puffer's Pond after the group called 911 and reported the man, who was later identified as 47-year-old John S. Fitzgerald, of 54 Pequot Rd. Southampton, according to Young.
Responding officers located Fitzgerald on the south end of the pond and arrested him.
Fitzgerald was charged with open and gross lewdness and held at the Hampshire County House of Corrections in lieu of $5,000 cash bail, according to Young.
He was due to be arraigned in the Eastern Hampshire District Court Thursday morning. The matter remains under investigation, Young said.
Fitzgerald was charged with seven counts of open and gross lewdness and lascivious behavior in 1995. He was arrested on the same charge in 1990 and 2008, according to the Executive Office of Public Safety's website.
