Dog thrown out of moving car in Wolcott

WOLCOTT, CT (WFSB) -

A local dog was thrown out like the trash; abandoned and left to fend for himself.

Someone tossed the dog out of a moving car on Mad River Road in Wolcott on Monday, and Bonny Hartigan heard a door slam and saw a silver sedan pull away just before seeing the dog.

"The door opened, and then closed," Hartigan said. "This pit bull came around and came over to see my dog," she said, adding that she named the dog River.

River the dog was abandoned, and Wolcott's animal control officer could tell by his injuries that the dog was tossed out of a moving vehicle.

"River has some road rash on him, he has wounds to his front paws near where his knuckles bend," said Roslyn Nenninger, Wolcott Animal Control officer.

Nenninger said when she and River got back to the dog pound, he did not want to get out of the car.

"It was like he was afraid he was going to get thrown out of the vehicle again," Nenninger added.

River has become another statistic in a growing problem in Wolcott. Nenninger said on average, she is rescuing one abandoned dog per week.

"River's got to be my fourth one in three-and-a-half weeks," she added.

With humane options readily available, she said there is no excuse to leave a healthy pet to survive in the wild.

"Call your animal control facilities, reach out to rescues, CT Humane Society. There's numerous ways to go about doing this," Nenninger added.

Hartigan said she hopes River gets a second chance now.

"I wish I had gotten up quicker and got a marker plate. It didn't dawn on me what was going on right away," she said.

Animal Control officers said River appears to be a very healthy dog and should be ready for adoption in a matter of weeks.
