Iraq veteran pleads guilty to stealing city money

Posted: Updated:

SALEM, Mass. (AP) - A disabled Iraq War veteran has been sentenced to 18 months in jail after pleading guilty to stealing nearly $63,000 from the city of Beverly.

The Salem News ( ) reports that Ronald Ribeiro was also sentenced Monday to five years' probation and ordered to pay back the money.

Prosecutors say the 34-year-old Ribeiro took advantage of a goodwill gesture by the city. Beverly had given him a check to help him move to a subsidized apartment for veterans.

Ribeiro used the account and routing numbers on the check to make transfers to his own account, and to wire funds to himself. The scheme was discovered in January.

Ribeiro's lawyer says his client suffered a traumatic brain injury during a second tour of duty in Iraq, which led to "uncharacteristic behavior."
