GREENVILLE, SC (FOX Carolina) -

A group of Upstate mothers held a "nurse-in" at a local Walmart on Monday after one of them claimed to have been humiliated for breastfeeding inside the store.

Mother Shawnee Colabella said the whole thing started when she was verbally attacked at the store on White Horse Road near Berea on the Fourth of July.

"Not only were they staring at me, they were making rude and disgusting comments about how disgusting what I was doing was, and how I should cover myself, and how if what I was doing was even legal," Colabella said.

She said she asked to speak with store management, but got nowhere.

"It made feel uncomfortable, disrespected and ostracized," Colabella said.

Colabella shared her story on a Facebook page called "Upstate SC Breastfeeders" and the group helped organize the "nurse-in."

Cell phone video taken inside the store shows the women and children sitting in the middle of the aisle.

FOX Carolina's Adrian Acosta said the group mainly got positive feedback from customers and employees during the event.

Walmart says they are still investigating and issued the following statement:

"We welcome nursing mothers to breastfeed their child in our store. We recognize the intimate and personal nature of the decision a mother makes to breastfeed their child - and we never want to make her feel unwelcome in our stores because of it. We apologize if our customer felt uncomfortable during her store visit."

Additionally, the spokesperson said they were able to speak to Colabella and apologize to her for her experience in the store.
