I-75 S back open after fatal multi-vehicle crash in Monroe County

MONROE, MI (Toledo News Now) -

An early morning accident in Monroe County left one man dead and several others injured. I-75 south was shut down for about four hours because of the wreck.

The Monroe County Sheriff's Office says the cause of the fatal crash began with another accident. The sheriff's office says Corron T. Ollie, 24, of Lathrop Village, Michigan was involved in an accident while driving a black Chevrolet S-10 on I-75 shout just north of Erie Road. Deputies say the truck was disabled in the accident, and could not be moved from the left lane of the highway. The sheriff's office says the truck was displaying hazard lights.

A short time after the truck came to a rest in the left lane, deputies say Jeffery S. Buchanan, 49, of Woodhaven, Michigan swerved to avoid the truck and lost control of his 2002 Ford Explorer. The Explorer rolled and Buchanan was ejected from the vehicle, according to the sheriff's office. Deputies say Buchanan was not wearing a seat belt.

Buchanan was pronounced dead at the scene.

Just a few minutes later, the Chevrolet truck was struck by two other vehicles. The sheriff's office says after all was said and done, 6 vehicles had been involved in 5 separate accidents.

It is unclear how many other people were hurt in the wrecks, or how badly. I-75 southbound reopened around 8:45 a.m. Monday.

The Monroe County Sheriff's Office continues to investigate the crash.
