CONWAY, MA (WSHM) -

Crews from across Franklin County spent much of Sunday evening searching for a woman who is believed to have gone under in the Deerfield River.

State police were keeping the scene around Wagner Road secure as the search continued Monday morning.

State and local search parties were searching the river and an air wing helicopter was scheduled to assist in the search later Monday, according to state police officials.

The river was extremely turbulent and the water levels were high, according to police.

The area where the victim was last seen was a restricted area, indicating that no swimmers or tubers were allowed in that area.

The first emergency call came in to Shelburne Fire Department at about 7:15 p.m. regarding the distressed swimmer.

Conway Fire Chief Robert Baker told CBS 3 that they were told about a 26-year-old woman who was tubing with her friends below the No. 2 dam Sunday evening.

Baker said, according to the woman's friends, the woman fell out of her tube, surfaced above the water once, went back under and never came back up.

Her friends then called for help.

Baker said crews attempted to dive for the woman, but it was very dangerous due to the currents in the river.

The search was called off for the night around 9 p.m. and resumed at 6 a.m. on Monday.

Baker said dam officials will lower the water to give the Northfield dive team a better chance of finding the woman.

Police and fire departments from Conway, Shelburne, Charlemont, Northfield, and Greenfield assisted in the search. There were more than 80 people involved in the search Monday afternoon.
