Agawam, MA, sits just north of the Connecticut border and, according to the Safewise website, the town offers a rural atmosphere with reasonably priced homes and well-respected schools.
"All the teachers participate with all their students and they help take care of all their students," Agawam resident Kyle Fraga said. "And if something goes wrong there is always someone there to help you in this town."
Those are a few of the reasons why Safewise ranks Agawam as one of the top 50 safest communities in Massachusetts.
"It's clean, it's safe," Agawam resident Mary Jane Disco says.
Disco has lived in Agawam for 10 years and says it is a great place to live.
"I love that it's a community where they have parades. And they have concerts on the green. And they have a wonderful school system," Disco said.
She wasn't surprised to hear it was on the Safewise list. Shanna Longhi, born and raised in town, didn't doubt it either.
"I've lived here my whole life, and my whole family is here and my friends are here," she said.
Just behind Agawam on the Safewise list were two other western Massachusetts communities: Amherst and Belchertown.
Agawam was listed as number 33.
The towns had to have a population of more than 10,000 to be considered. They were ranked based on the most recent FBI crime report. Safewise did say that not every community in Massachusetts has reported complete data to the FBI, so if a city you think is safe is not on the list, that may be why.
