HILLSBOROUGH, N.C. -

The charge of obtaining property by false pretenses against the former head of University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Department of African and Afro-American Studies has been dropped, Orange County District Attorney Jim Woodall announced Thursday.

Woodall said Julius Nyang'oro has cooperated with the SBI criminal investigation. He has also agreed to continue cooperating with Woodall's office.

The independent investigation being conducted by Kenneth Wainstein will also be aided by Nyang'oro, Woodall said in a statement.

Wainstein has spoken to Nyang'oro and his staff already during the course of the independent investigation, Woodall said.

Nyang'oro was indicted on a felony fraud count in December, charged with being paid $12,000 to teach a summer 2011 lecture course that did not meet and was treated as an independent study filled with football players.

In March 2012, the NCAA banned Carolina from postseason play in football for the 2012 season and put the football program on probation for 3 years. Carolina lost five football scholarships each year.

The NCAA also ruled that defensive coordinator John Blake, who had been fired by the school, could not be hired by an NCAA school for three years without that school showing why they shouldn't be punished for hiring him.
