A person was critically injured in an accident involving three vehicles Wednesday afternoon on Interstate 540 near RDU International Airport.
Police said a BMW driven by Nelson Figueroa, 40, of Raleigh stopped with its flashers on in the second right lane around 5:20 p.m. Brendan Dowd, 23, of Carrboro, was driving a Honda traveling in the far right lane had to swerve to the left to avoid plowing into cars slowing down in front of it, police said.
Dowd smashed into the stopped BMW, police said. Dowd’s Honda then went into the far left lane in the path of a Ford F-150 towing a boat driven by Jason Hughes, 38, of Raleigh.
Dowd had to be cut from the vehicle and transported to the hospital for treatment, police said.
Figueroa and Hughes did not receive serious injuries. The pickup had a 3-year-old girl and an 8-year-old boy passenger, police said. Neither was seriously injured.
Police have not filed charges in the accident.
Figueroa told investigators he was attempting to get his vehicle off the road when it was hit, police said.
