NEW LONDON, CT (WFSB) -

A Groton man has been charged with risk of injury to a minor after New London police said he left his 6-month-old child in a car that reached more than 130 degrees.

New London Police arrested Brian Pavao, 33, of Groton, on Tuesday after responding to the Shop Rite Supermarket parking lot on North Frontage Road.

Someone saw the child in the car and dialed 911.

"When it's hot, how could you leave the baby in the car?" said Lisa Cornish Beaz of New London. "Put the baby on your hip and do what you got to do."

"I don't understand," said Veronica Rivas, a mother. "There is no excuse to leave your kids in the car, especially in this heat."

Police said upon arrival, they found an unlocked vehicle solely occupied by a 6-month-old child, and three out of four windows were rolled all of the way up, and the fourth window was open less than one inch.

Police said the child was left in the car for 30 minutes or more, and they said the interior temperature of the vehicle at one point reached more than 130 degrees.

"I'm just speechless when I think about it," said Janet Smith, a Waterford resident. "That poor defenseless child being left all alone in a car."

The child was breathing and alert, and was taken to Lawrence and Memorial Hospital for treatment.

Eyewitness News tried to contact the mother of the child. Friends said she was at the hospital with the child.

"If that was my kid in someone else's car, and someone did that to my kid, I'd be livid," said Smith. "There's no excuse for that."

Pavao was held on $75,000 bond and the state's Department of Children and Families was notified.
