Mason Square Initiative creating positive neighborhood

SPRINGFIELD, MA (WSHM) -

The Mason Square Initiative is a neighborhood group made up of residents, city officials and local law enforcement officers.

On Tuesday night, they took to the streets, the same streets on which each member has grown up.

With every door knock and every step made, they reached out to their fellow neighbors during a time of need.

"We want to let them know that with the recent violence that they're not alone, that there are groups and individuals who do care and are working on their behalf," member Darryl Moss said.

Their focus is to reduce crime by employing new tactics to improve sharing information from citizens to the police department.

"Our job today is to go out and let people know about all the services, activities and events that are available for residents," Moss said.

In an area familiar with violence, members said they want to shed some light on their neighborhood and changed it from a place marked by makeshift memorials with that of a more positive environment.

"We have a lot of the youth that are doing great things, a lot of adults doing great things. We need to celebrate that and decrease the amount of memorials that we have and celebrate the education that we have an are pushing in the city," member Keyshawn Dodds said.

And that's a message being echoed by residents as well.

"We are here in the community and are able to stand up together as one. Be blessed out there and keep the love going," resident Gabriel Cardona said.
