Group marches through NC in support of medical marijuana

Posted: Updated:
RALEIGH, N.C. - As lawmakers try to decide if they’ll legalize a form of medical marijuana, a group of men supporting a broadening of medical marijuana use is walking across North Carolina with the aim of talking to lawmakers about a ballot referendum on the issue.

The group has been walking across the state since June 6. They are heading to Jones Street to have their voices heard about the issue.

The group, called March Against Fear, started in Asheville, highlighting their march with clips on YouTube. In the videos, one of the members carries a plastic marijuana plant—the others carry signs and stop along the way to raise support for House Bill 1161 which would create a constitutional amendment to legalize the use of medical marjuana.

In the meantime, lawmakers are  moving closer to allowing the use of CBD oil, or Charlotte’s Web, a form of medical marijuana that’s been known to help treat children with epilepsy.

The House passed HB 1220 last week, which would legalize the use of CBD oil for medical use.

Some families in North Carolina moved to Colorado where the oil is already legal. But those families have said they would move back to North Carolina if the use of CBD oil is legal.

The measure now moves to the Senate. If it’s approved, then it will be up to Gov. Pat McCrory to decide whether to approve the bill or veto it.

The participants from March Against Fear plan to arrive in Raleigh sometime Monday and they’ll begin their lobbying efforts on Tuesday.
