WESTFIELD, MA (WSHM) -

The city's post office was rededicated on Sunday, named in honor of William Trant, the former postmaster in Westfield who had a 33-year career with the Postal Service.

Trant was also a Westfield city councilor for 14 years and served briefly as the city's mayor.

Prior to his postal career, Trant served in the U.S. Army, where he was wounded during D-Day and the Battle of the Bulge.

Trant retired to Florida and passed away in 2002.

His daughter, Sally Trant, told CBS 3 that her father would have been very honored by Sunday's ceremony.

During his military career, Trant was honored with a Purple Heart, along with five Bronze Battle Stars and many other commendations.
