Community shred event held in Amherst

AMHERST, MA (WSHM) -

A community shred event was held in the parking lot of the People's Bank for three hours on Sunday morning.

The event was hosted by the Seniors and Law Enforcement Together council, in conjunction with the Amherst Police Department, the Hampshire County Sheriff's Office and the Northwestern District Attorney's Office.

Organizers said residents are very appreciative for the chance to help reduce identity theft.

"They're very happy that they've had this opportunity," said Chris Geffin, who works in the district attorney's office. "We hear, 'You know, we have so much that we couldn't shred it.' It's expensive to have a company come to your house to shred your documents. Pro Shred and a lot of other shredding companies do this as a community service project, so we're happy we can work with them as well."

The SALT council will hold another free shred event in Greenfield on Sept. 28.
