8 loggerhead sea turtles nesting on Tybee Island

TYBEE ISLAND, GA (WTOC) -

Tybee Island has eight confirmed loggerhead sea turtle nests, and volunteers from the Tybee Sea Turtle Project are monitoring the nests.

They're asking for your help in keeping the turtles safe.

If you're out on the beach, be sure to pick up your trash, fill in your holes and knock down your sand castles when you leave.

They said turtles can be scared away or even fall into holes when they come ashore to lay eggs. Another important thing to consider is lighting.

"People want to carry flashlights," said Tybee Sea Turtle Project Coordinator Tammy Smith. "You don't really need them. It's bright enough out and the flashlights will deter our sea turtles from nesting, and it also affects if babies are emerging, heading toward the water, so we encourage no flashlights at the beach. If you're staying near, close your blinds from the hotel or condo windows because the lights from TV screens, computer screens casts as shadow on the beach, so if you can help keep the windows closed, it helps keep the beach darker."

The turtles will be nesting through mid-August.
