Holyoke stabbing suspect appears in court

HOLYOKE, MA (WSHM) -

A stabbing on Mosher Street in Holyoke on Monday afternoon left one man with critical injuries. Police have arrested 22-year-old Jose Morales, and he was arraigned in Holyoke District Court on Tuesday morning. 

Morales was arrested near Ely and North East streets in Holyoke just after 10 p.m. Monday.

In addition to assault and battery with a dangerous weapon and armed assault to murder, Morales was charged with possession of heroin and intent to distribute. He was taken into custody carrying more than 40 bags of heroin. Morales is being held on $100,000 bail.

Holyoke police officers responded to the call on Mosher Street just after noon on Monday. Officers closed off a section of the street to search for any evidence. 

Police told CBS 3 the 26-year-old victim is recovering from surgery after suffering life-threatening stab wounds to the upper chest area. No other details about the incident have been released. 

The investigation is ongoing and police are urging witnesses to come forward with more information about the incident. 

Morales will be back in court on July 25.
