SPRINGFIELD, MA (WSHM) -

Baystate Children's Hospital held a special reunion on Saturday morning for its Neonatal Intensive Care Unit patients.

The event gave families a chance to reunite with the doctors and nurses who cared for them.

Baystate's NICU program provides specialized care for premature infants and critically ill babies born throughout Western Massachusetts.

Some of the parents in attendance said it was good to reunite with the doctors and nurses who helped them through some stressful times.

"It's a very stressful situation at times, but the doctors and nurses there were great," said Jimmy Visneau, a father of twin girls who were in the NICU for about 90 days. "They helped us through every question, and they had all the answers they could possibly give us at the time."

"It's kind of a special relationship you get to develop with the parents because it's actually almost child-rearing for that last couple months of pregnancy, that your doing for the majority of the time that they are in the NICU," said Dr. Jeff Shenberger, director of the NICU.

Saturday's reunion also featured face painting, as well as an appearance by Dora the Explorer and Sesame Street's Elmo.
