PRINCETON, N.C. -

A Raleigh man died after colliding with a highway sign Saturday evening while running from authorities on his motorcycle.

Ahmad Sharrieff, 34, of Raleigh, was driving a 2011 BMW motorcycle on U.S. 70 around 6:10 p.m. in Johnston County when a North Carolina State Highway Patrol trooper attempted to stop him for speeding, authorities said.

Sharrieff did not stop for the trooper and continued to drive east on U.S. 70, the Highway Patrol said.

Sharrieff lost control of his motorcycle after crossing into Wayne County and hit a highway sign near Commerce Parkway outside Princeton, authorities said.

Sharrieff died at the scene, the Highway Patrol said.
