LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - A Kentucky Derby racehorse was euthanized following a battle with a crippling disease Thursday.
According to Starlight Racing, on May 27 the horse, Intense Holiday, underwent surgery for a condylar fracture that happened during training.
Following the surgery Intense Holiday was retired from the sport.
Doctors at the Hogan Equine Veterinary Clinic expected him to recover but developed laminitis in both forelimbs.
Thursday in a post on Starlight Racing's Facebook page co-managing partner Jack Wolf was quoted saying, "This horse was a fighter and he fought for his life in the same way he battled on the track—with tenacity. It's a terrible loss for all of us."
Intense Holiday finished 12th in the 140th Kentucky Derby.
