Two men are facing felony charges after they allegedly broke in to a tractor-trailer parked in the back of the Lowe's located at 1600 Boston Road.
An officer checked the rear of the building about 1:15 a.m. Thursday looking for possible thieves, according to Springfield police Sgt. John Delaney.
When the officer approached the back of the building he could see two suspicious men near an open tractor-trailer, which had a pickup truck backed up to it. He called for backup and questioned the men, who had clearly loaded three air conditioners, a microwave, and metal duct work into their truck, Delaney said.
"The two thieves told the officer that they had permission from the manager to break in and steal," Delaney said, adding that the tractor-trailer was filled with returned items waiting to be shipped back.
The officer did not believe them. Other responding officers were able to locate a night manager, who confirmed that the two men were lying, Delaney said.
Police charged Jeffrey McCarthy, 48, of 176 Savoy Ave., Springfield, and Raymond Ocasio, 24, of 23 Putnam Circle, Springfield, with breaking and entering at night for a felony, and larceny over $250, according to an arrest report.
Their pickup truck was impounded by police pending other investigations into other possible break ins.
