Number of Central American children in Nogales facility grows

Posted: Updated:

TUCSON, AZ (TNN) – More than 1100 children from Central America remained inside a Border Patrol processing facility in Nogales Tuesday night.  The consul for Honduras said upon leaving the facility that getting donated items to the children remained a challenge.

About 130 children were expected to leave by Tuesday night for other locations selected by Refugee Resettlement as well as Immigration and Customs Enforcement.  From there, ICE will make further determinations about the future of the children in the United States.

The Nogales community has been collecting clothing for the children in the facility.  But the consul said that changes are slowly happening.  A tent has been set up for children to play outside; however, the lack of a fence around it has prevented its use.  He said that supplies such as mattresses and other donated items have yet to reach the children.

"Yes, it's a big challenge they told me. It's a detention facility, and logistics, and liability, they cannot let volunteers, so, I don't think that's going to happen because we addressed that from day one and we still have not been able to make any progress there," said Honorary Consul of Honduras Tony Banegas.

Why such an influx of children are coming from Guatemala, El Salvador, and Honduras was a mystery to Banegas, who said that he visits his family there every few weeks.  He said that from what some teenage migrants told him, they have parents or relatives in the country who have become citizens or permanent residents.  These young migrants said that they are coming for a chance to get into high school in the United States.
