RALEIGH, N.C. -

North Carolina's first crack at selling a seldom-used government helicopter online appears to have been a bust.

The Department of Transportation confirmed there were no bids on eBay for its Sikorsky S-76 helicopter before the auction closed at midday Monday. The minimum bid had been set at $1.5 million.

DOT said it wants to get rid of the helicopter because of its high operation and maintenance costs and low usage. The aircraft has been used to survey disaster recovery efforts and for economic development activities.

DOT spokesman Mike Charbonneau says the agency will open up another bidding period on the online auction site as soon as possible. Department officials will look at other sales options if no one bites on the sale during the second round on Ebay.
