Police recovered a handgun after they witnessed a man reach towards his waistband as if he was carrying a firearm and chased him until he threw the weapon.

Members of the street crime unit were on patrol Wednesday near the intersection of Itendale Street and Belmont Avenue assisting with area gang activity and with investigations regarding recent shootings, according to Springfield Police Sgt. John Delaney.

Police spotted the suspicious man about 4:30 p.m. As the officers exited their unmarked cruiser the suspect fled on foot, Delaney said.

As the man ran through back yards towards Meredith Street he grabbed the gun from his waistband, and the officers demanded he drop it. The suspect then threw the weapon into another yard and continued to run.

The suspect was not caught, but police did recover the Glock semi-automatic pistol. The case is still under investigation and arrests are possible.
