PHOENIX (CBS5) -

The owner of a home was able to escape a raging house fire in Phoenix on Thursday morning, but only two of his eight pets survived.

The fire began in the back of a house in the area of 7th Drive and Union Hills about 8 a.m. and spread to the attic, said Phoenix Fire Capt. Benjamin Santillan.

The homeowner told firefighters he noticed the smell of burning paper and went to his back yard and found the intense fire.

He said he tried to rescue his pets, but was able to escape with just one of his three dogs. Firefighters rescued a second dog, but five cats and a third dog died in the fire, Santillan said.

No cause of the fire had been determined and no other details were immediately available, Santillan said.
