SPRINGFIELD, MA (WSHM) -

On Wednesday Springfield police ascended on Avon Place after their shot spotter notification alerted them of a shooting.

They say a 33-year-old city man was shot. He rushed to Baystate Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.

A white jeep sat wrapped in yellow police tape with the victim's blood marking the spot where he was shot.

No more than 24 hours earlier around 12:30 Wednesday morning, Darrell Jenkins, 23, of Springfield was shot and killed on Kensington Avenue in the city's Forest Park section.

A 20-year-old woman standing next to Jenkins was shot in the mouth. She is expected to be Ok.

That same morning in a separate incident just 20 minutes before, a 26-year-old man was sent to the hospital after he was shot while riding his bicycle on Maynard Street.

Springfield police believe all shootings were gang-related.

"Our gang officers, our narcotics officers and our sector officers are well aware of the problem. We have our arms around this," Sgt. John Delaney said.

Wednesday's shootings come just two days after shots rang out in front of Calhoun Park in the city's North End section.

On May 29, a male and female were shot near the Burger King on State Street. They survived.

However, two days before that, Lenezzia Clarke, 18, of Springfield was found shot to death in the doorway of a Union street home.

These shootings also considered gang-related.

Police said the general public should not be worried.

"I'm confident in our police department. The citizens should be confident in the police department. We have a great department," Delaney said.

Residents said they have become numb to the sounds of gunfire echoing through their streets.

"I'm not surprised when I hear gunshots around the corner. It never gets old. I stay in the house with my kids and my wife. Wherever you go there's always going to be trouble," one man who wished to be identified as George, said.
