Agawam school nurses continue to fight for contract

AGAWAM, MA (WSHM) -

Agawam school nurses continue to fight for contracts and better pay.

They've worked without a contract for nearly a year and say they're significantly underpaid compared with the other nurses in Hampden County.

Wednesday they met with a negotiating committee, but school nurse Mary Pasteris says the meeting was unsuccessful.

She fears the nurses will not get the wages they need and will continue to lose more staff.

In the past five years, they've lost seven nurses.

"They need to help us to get to where we can make the job an attractive job, new people will want to come on board and the people with us now will want to stay," Pasteris said.

She and others will picket outside Agawam City Council on June 16.

The meeting is set for 7 p.m.

Agawam Mayor Richard Cohen has said he does not want to discuss the negotiations through the media.
