SPRINGFIELD, MA (WSHM) -

June 4 is a somber anniversary in Springfield, as it marks two years since the city lost a police officer in the line of duty,

At 1:06 Wednesday afternoon, police cruisers around Springfield stopped and turned on their lights to honor Officer Kevin Ambrose.

Ambrose was shot and killed during a domestic call in the Pine Point section of the city on June 4, 2012.

The incident on Lawton street was between a woman and his estranged girlfriend. Ambrose stepped in to save the woman and her child.

Sgt. John Delaney says Ambrose lost his life protecting the citizens of Springfield and he is greatly missed.

"It's a tough day for us, it's a remembrance for a great guy," Delaney said.

Officers were notified over the police scanner to take a moment of silence to remember Ambrose who worked for the department for more than two decades.
