Springfield police call shootings gang-related

SPRINGFIELD, MA (WSHM) -

More gun violence in Springfield leaves one dead and two injured. Springfield police said they have the situation under control. No arrests have been made yet, but police believe the shootings to be gang-related.

Just after midnight on Wednesday, a 26-year-old man was shot once in the lung on Maynard Street while riding a bike. Springfield police said a person driving a white Kia with Connecticut plates held the gun out the window and shot the victim.

Shortly after, an unrelated shooting took place on Kensington Avenue.

When officers arrived they found a 20-year-old female victim shot once in the mouth, lying at the corner of White Street and Pasadena Street. Officers then found 23-year-old Darrell Jenkins on Kensington Avenue shot to death with one gunshot wound to the head and one to his hip. Jenkins lived on the same street he was killed.

"The public should realize that the shootings and the sporadic violence you're seeing right now are gang-related, our gang officers, our narcotics officers and our sector officers are well aware of the problem we have our arms around this, this is not a random crime by any means," said Delaney.

Sergeant Delaney said he cannot comment on if this incident is related to last month's homicide where 18-year-old Lenezzia Clarke was killed. He said the department will be adding extra patrols.

"We have a handle on this, I'm confident in our police department the citizens should also have confidence in our police department, we have a great police dept.," said Delaney.

A neighbor said shootings in the area are becoming too common.

"There's always shootings. I'm not surprised when I hear gun shots around the corner," said a neighbor.

This marks the city's fourth homicide of the year.
