Varina H.S. prank leads to charges against students

VARINA, VA (WWBT) -

A group of Varina High school students have been charged with a felony after pulling a senior prank on campus.

Police said a dozen people are facing charges. Three are under 18, and officers need to arrest one more person. Police said the adult suspects are Tiffany Birchett, Quinton Burt, Khadijah Ford, Dekell Lawrence, Khalil Randall, Donte Robertson, Aja'd Tart and Justin Diggs.

School leaders said the vandals covered parts of the campus with chocolate sauce, syrup, rice, flour and eggs. They dumped trash cans and placed the empty cans on the roofs of several buildings. They also used permanent marker to write on doors and walls in the school.

The mother of one male suspect, who did not want to be identified, said of her son, "He's upset, he's really upset. Of course now, if he could take it back, he wouldn't go up there. But it's too late now."

Some students think a felony charge is too harsh.

"I think that's overboard. It's not that serious, it's just chocolate and rice," said Varina senior Steven Crawley.

But the brother-in-law of suspect Tiffany Birchett had strong words.

"I think it's a stupidest thing I've ever heard in my life," he said.  "I think the charges fit. If it was up to me I'd give them more." Birchett's brother-in-law also did not want to be identified.

Officials said damage costs from the vandalism total more than $1,000.

Most of the suspects will make their first court appearance tomorrow.
