PHOENIX (CBS5/AP) -

Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer is criticizing immigration officials for sending migrant families from Texas to Arizona and later dropping them off at bus stations in Phoenix and Tucson without any food, water or basic necessities.

In a letter to President Barack Obama, Brewer called it "dangerous and unconscionable policy." She asked Obama to provide details about the policy and whether it would continue.

Border patrol agents in the Rio Grande Valley in Texas transferred over 400 migrants to Arizona over Memorial Day weekend after becoming overwhelmed by the large number of families and unaccompanied minors caught crossing the border illegally.

Immigrations and Customs Enforcement officials then dropped off the families at Greyhound stations in Tucson and Phoenix.

Many were women with children. ICE by policy does not detain children.

"It is especially disconcerting that the Department of Homeland Security instituted this operation without any notification to my office, the Arizona Department of Public Safety or the Arizona Department of Homeland Security," Brewer wrote.

The migrants are required to report back to ICE.
